    JOBS TO DO NOW

It's time to harvest your garlic

The leaves of your garlic should be browning off which is the sign that it's time to harvest. Don't wait for the foliage to dry completely, like onions because the bulbs will split and not store as well. Fork to loosen soil, carefully pull the bulbs and hang to dry (away from direct sunlight).

    Net fruit trees

Protect your ripening stone fruit with fruit tree netting. When held taught, it is less of a concern to birds and helps to allow your ripening fruit to reach maturity on the tree, without becoming bird food! See how here.

    Tomatoes

Early fruiting varieties like Stupice will be bearing their crop at the end of this month, just in time for Christmas salads. Continue to water evenly to avoid fruit split and apply potash to improve yield and flavour.

    Plant A Living Mulch

Mulch helps to conserve moisture, prevent weeds and improve the organic content of our soils; however, it does need annual replenishment.

An alternative is to plant a living mulch or ground cover to cover the soil, prevent the loss of precious topsoil, out-compete weeds and improve the overall aesthetics of your garden.

You can use a variety of plants in this role including herbs and Mediterranean plants. We’ve put together a list of our favourite ground covers to plant now to help get your garden ready for summer.
